Layne’s, a College Station chicken strip restaurant that’s developed a cult-following of Texas A&M University graduates, will soon arrive in the Houston area.
The chain is set to open its first Houston-area outpost sometime this summer at 23703 Cinco Ranch Road in Katy, according to a press release. A College Station stalwart since 1994, the chain is known for its crispy fried chicken tenders, which are served with a variety of dipping sauces or tucked into sandwiches. Layne’s has been in expansion mode over the past couple of years, branching out beyond College Station to open three restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
According to the chain, when those locations started opening back in 2018, Layne’s fans drove upwards of two hours to get their hands on that beloved fried chicken. “I can’t imagine what Houston will do,” Layne’s partner Matt O’Reilly said in a statement.
As far as the food is concerned, expect freshly fried chicken strips that are cut, battered, and cooked at the restaurant. There’s also a sandwich that’s served on Texas toast with or without bacon and cheddar cheese, plus sides like fries and potato salad. Layne’s also boasts its own secret sauce, the recipe for which is a frequent topic of discussion for Aggies who’ve since moved away from College Station.
The Houston restaurant will be operated by Masroor Fatany, a Texas A&M alum and restaurant owner who currently operates five locations of NYC-based chain the Halal Guys in Houston. “We have wanted a Layne’s in Houston for years,” Fatany said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce them to Houston, and reconnect my fellow Aggies with some food from home.”
Expect Layne’s to open in Katy sometime this summer. Stay tuned for an official opening date.
