The weather’s warming, vaccine shipments are headed to H-Town in droves, and some sense of normalcy is returning as more and more Bayou City favorites, like the Miller Outdoor Theatre, are reopening.
Yes, the Miller Outdoor Theatre finally reopens on May 1 with a summer season full of family-fun offerings, including Houston Ballet Reignited (May 7–8), the Houston Ballet’s first live performance since the city’s Covid-19 shutdown last year, and the park’s annual Juneteenth celebration (June 19), this year featuring Grammy-winning blues legend Bobby Rush.
But before you pack up the car and brave the re-emerging Houston traffic for Hermann Park, there are a few things you should know first. The theater has put in place the Miller Two-Step (yes, like the country-western dance, a staple of dance halls and dads at weddings) to ensure the safety of everyone and follow City of Houston guidelines regarding Covid-19:
Step #1
All tickets are available online, beginning at 9 a.m. a week before each performance and closing at noon the day of the performance. Covered seating will be extremely limited and socially distant, so keep an eye out for when tickets go on sale to snatch yours up. On the other hand, hill seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be limited, so make your plans ahead of time to guarantee a comfortable area for yourself and your posse.
Step #2
Masks are required for all attendees, except for when you are eating and drinking. Also, if you are not feeling up to a crowd just yet, the theater is sharing livestreamed performances through its website, Facebook, and YouTube.
