Oprah Winfrey Is Coming (Virtually) to Houston

Sure, we may never have a chance to win a car on The Oprah Winfrey Show again, but at least we can see the iconic media mogul during Blue Willow Bookshop’s virtual event on May 3.

Blue Willow is partnering with publisher Flatiron Books and Portland’s Powell’s Books to bring Winfrey and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph.D. virtually to Houston for a discussion of the pair’s new book, What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing.

During the talk, Perry and Winfrey will discuss how past trauma and childhood adversity impacts our behavior and decisions, even as adults.

“Through this lens we can build a renewed sense of personal self-worth and ultimately recalibrate our responses to circumstances, situations, and relationship,” Winfrey said in a release. “It is, in other words, the key to reshaping our very lives.”

Over the years, Blue Willow has made itself a national name for its events with high-profile authors—think Jeannette Walls, Rick Bragg, and, more recently, George W. Bush—but next week’s virtual talk will be a shop first for both Winfrey and Perry, events coordinator Cathy Berner tells Houstonia.

“We have not had the opportunity to host either author before and, thanks to the world of virtual events, we can do that!”

Each ticket for the Zoom event comes with a copy of the book. Tickets range from $32 to $42, depending on whether you pick up your copy in-store or have it shipped to your door.

6 p.m. May 3. $32–$42. Online. Learn more here.
