Here’s Another Reason to Visit Old Sixth Ward’s Henderson

If you haven’t yet visited Henderson & Kane in the Old Sixth Ward, this might be a good time.

The general store announced last week the addition of Aaron Lazo to its team. Lazo spent 35 years at the beloved Burt’s Meat Market & Cajun Foods, which closed in March. He’ll work with chef de cuisine Jesse Gallegos to tweak Henderson & Kane’s sausage menu while introducing homemade chorizo verde, breakfast sausage, and smoked bratwurst.

But that isn’t all. H&K owners John and Veronica Avila also announced the upcoming Old Sixth: Sodas, Sweets, and Spirits at 2111 Washington Ave. Here, the Avilas envision a combination of old-school ice cream parlor with soda counter and jazzy cocktail lounge—think boozy milkshakes and ice cream cocktails along with traditional ice cream flavors and standalone beverages. Also, table-side fondue.

To see the concept through, the couple has turned to Jojo Martinez of J Martini Hospitality to bring the booze, and Jasmine Chida of Sweet Cup Gelato to craft the sweet treats.

“We’ve built a reliable and close relationship with these incredible women,” said John Avila in a press release. “Pairing Jasmine’s creative spin on nostalgic ice cream recipes with Jojo’s competition level flaring skills and hospitality expertise, we’ll be seeing ice cream flying across the bar in no time.”

A Kickstarter campaign has launched to help fund the effort.

For those just itching for more salad, you’re in luck: Sweetgreen is continuing its Houston expansion with two new stores. The Southern California-based, fast-casual chain’s fourth H-Town location is opening Tuesday at 9595 Six Pines Dr. in The Woodlands, while its fifth is coming soon to 600 N. Shepherd Dr., or M-K-T Heights. That location will feature a patio with nearly 50 seats, along with original artwork from Dana Caldera.
