Boozy retro soda shop headed to Washington Avenue

The minds behind Henderson & Kane, the upscale neighborhood market just south of Washington Avenue, have big expansion plans for the next year. In addition to a second location of H&K, set to open in a yet-to-be0announced location in Spring 2022, owners John and Veronica Avila will open a Prohibition-inspired old-fashioned soda shop, ice cream parlor and speakeasy bar on Washington Avenue.

The bar, called Old Sixth, will open at 2111 Washington Avenue in early 2022, and will serve up fancy sodas, ice cream splits, boozy milkshakes and small bites like tableside fondue, according to the bar’s Kickstarter. By night, Old Sixth will take one more of a speakeasy vibe, with classic cocktails and jazz music.

No word yet on an opening date for either project, but stay tuned to Eater for more details.

Cult-fave Montrose pizzeria Romano’s reopens

Romano’s, the New York-style pizzeria nestled between TJ Maxx and Marshall’s in a shopping center off West Grey, is back in business. The inconspicuous pizza shop, known for selling some of Houston’s best foldable slices, closed in November after a fire at the large nail salon next door caused significant damage to the restaurant. Romano’s owners took the opportunity to renovate its interior, including adding larger TVs and a new floor, according to CultureMap. Romano’s, at 1528 W Gray Street, officially reopens Monday, May 24.

State Fare lands in the The Woodlands

State Fare Kitchen & Bar, the made-from-scratch restaurant serving Texas-style fare, is expanding to The Woodlands. The new location, the third from restaurant group Culinary Khancepts, will open in late 2021 at Hughes Landing, with a location overlook Lake Woodlands. State Fare’s other two locations are in Sugar Land and Memorial City.
