We all love a good plot twist, however Theatre Under the Stars’s 2021 season has had enough false starts and stops to make your head spin. But finally, thanks to more and more folks getting vaccinated for Covid-19, TUTS is returning to the Hobby Center.
The beloved theater company has pushed its return to the Hobby Center until October, when Rock of Ages, the jukebox musical ode to ’80s rock ‘n’ roll, will hit the stage in all its big-haired, leopard-print glory. After that, much of the season remains as previously announced. The biggest adjustment to the calendar is that the highly anticipated Broadway revival of 1776 won’t be making a stop in Houston at all this season (it’s difficult to bring a show that hasn’t officially opened on the Great White Way yet). Instead, TUTS’s season will conclude in May with the always-popular national touring cast of Jersey Boys.
“This is a show we often get requests for,” Artistic Director Dan Knechtges said in a statement, “and we’re excited to include it in this celebratory season.”
And don’t forget about the company’s upcoming gala, themed “Lights Up!,” on October 22. No headliner’s been announced for this year’s extravaganza at the Post Oak Hotel yet, but if previous guests are anything to go by, the news will preemptively have us exclaiming “Oh, What a Night.”
